South Korean singer-songwriter Bibi has given us a peek into her highly anticipated upcoming album – Lowlife Princess-Noir – with the pre-release single “Animal Farm,” coinciding with her 24th birthday.

Written and co-composed by Bibi alongside The Need, “Animal Farm” opens with a playful piano melody that gradually fades out to welcome an eerie, almost sinister sonic sphere. The transition of sounds is spot on, rustling up an exciting yet tense mood to support the larger storyline of the music video. The track itself is dark and decadent with rich bass synth and dramatic violin pieces heightening the listener’s mood with every verse. Bibi matches the song’s emotional landscape through a varied vocal delivery, depending on what the production frame demands. Marked by a soaring electric guitar riff, the rock-esque outro is a breath of fresh air, concluding the track in high spirits.

Inspired by Quintin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, the music video is a cinematic extravaganza with action, drama and bloodshed. With blood spluttering and limbs being sliced in one swift move, this video is certainly not for the faint-hearted. Seemingly a social commentary on the male gaze and objectification of women, it opens with Bibi curled up on a posh dinner table with masked men seated on either side. Her posture and the apple sandwiched between her teeth is a direct reference to the giant roasted pig you often find at high-end dinner parties. With the switch in the soundscape, the visuals usher in Bibi walking into the same party in a gorgeous white gown. As she casually walks around the room, her eyes land on a Katana sword. Unwavered by her surroundings, Bibi swiftly lifts the sword and sprints right across the table, beheading the supposed leader in one fell swoop. What follows next is a gory action sequence, highlighting the prowess Bibi brings to the table as an artist. With the help of her sword and guns, the singer effortlessly takes down everyone around her. The music video concludes on a symbolic note with Bibi playing the guitar on the same table she had once laid on, to be ravished by a group of men.

“Animal Farm” is the first pre-release single off Lowlife Princess-Noir. The record follows the singer’s 2021 EP Life Is A Bi… that ranked seventh on Rolling Stone India’s 10 Best Korean Hip-Hop and R&B Albums of 2021. The singer is also set to perform at Head In The Clouds festival in Jakarta this December.
