Watch: BLACKPINK Return With New Single ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’

The track is part of the four-member girl group's debut EP 'Square Up'

After keeping fans waiting for nearly a year, South Korean girl group BLACKPINK made their big comeback earlier today with their new EP Square Up. The release was accompanied by a gleaming music video for the lead single, “DDU-DU DDU-DU” and is the group’s first release since last year’s single “As If It’s Your Last.”

With soaring vocals from Rosé and Jisoo and fiery rap from Jennie and Lisa, “DDU-DU DDU-DU” is a triumphant ode to the group’s massive success so far; “When we want, we’ll steal outright/Whatever you do, it’s like cutting water with a knife/Our hands are full of a fat check/If you’re curious, fact check,” raps Lisa.

The video is formulaic by design with the individual shots of each member interspersed by clips of them coming together for group choreography; however, each frame is crisply composed and features the group’s signature black-and-pink theme on the elaborate sets. The key dance move sees the members emulating machine guns with their fingers as they sing, “Hit you with that ddu-du ddu-du du!” BLACKPINK also retain their taste for urban couture with each member dressed in several designer outfits.

Produced by YG Entertainment’s Teddy, 24, R.Tee and Bekuh Boom, “DDU-DU DDU-DU” features traces of oriental instruments running through the trap-infused rap verses and the chorus, while the pre-chorus keeps it clean with a focus on pop-y vocals. The  final verse does get a little muddled, see-sawing between Middle Eastern/Indian vibes and rolling trap.

Other tracks on Square Up include the dancehall-heavy “Forever Young,”  the trap ballad “Really” and the sassy break-up anthem “See U Later.” “DDU-DU DDU-DU” crossed five million views within the first four hours of its release and is currently number 16 on the overall singles chart on iTunes India while Square Up has taken the top spot at number one on the overall albums chart. While BLACKPINK formally debuted in 2016, Square Up is the group’s first official EP.
