The Shillong blues rockers are out with their first new song since 2018's debut album 'Tempted'
Gospel blues isn’t all staid. Just ask Shillong’s rock band Blue Temptation. Their latest single “Evil Mind” is suitably dark when it comes to crunchy guitar riffs and smoky organ layers. The six-member band stomp through their new song in a music video directed by Meghalaya filmmaker El Dhar from his production house Quarion Cine Sicarius.
While Tempted — the band’s 2018 debut album — saw them fairly influenced by gospel, there were also excursions into the rock ‘n roll and R&B territory. “Evil Mind,” however, is sonorous in its incendiary rhythms, guitarists Gregory Ford Nongrum and Shepherd Najiar breaking into soaring blues solos between verses. Over the emphatic guitar and keyboard hooks, vocalist Daryll Diengdoh muses about dark and light and how “everybody’s got a price.”
In the accompanying video shot by Dhar, Diengdoh doubles up as a sort of preacher figure, bringing in a remorseless shackled inmate who takes an oath and is — through the course of the song — served justice along with an older man, who seem to be guilty. “Evil Mind” was recorded at Shillong bluesman Rudy Wallang’s A Hole in the Wall studio and has been mixed and mastered by Auckland-based Zorran Mendonsa.
