Watch The Bustle of Mumbai in Sarathy Korwar’s New Video for ‘Mumbay’

The song is the jazz musician’s lead single off his forthcoming album ‘More Arriving’ featuring rapper MC Mawali

London-based jazz musician and percussionist Sarathy Korwar announced the release of his upcoming second album More Arriving by dropping the lead single off the record, “Mumbay,” earlier this week. The track also features Mumbai-based rapper MC Mawali from hip-hop crew Swadesi.

The song is in an odd-time signature of 7/4, unusual for a rap song but not atypical for Mawali who spits verses in classical Carnatic rhythms, embellished by Tamar Osborn’s undulating saxophone licks and Korwar’s powerhouse percussion. Mawali’s verses are an ode to his hometown and the raw talent booming in the populous streets. The hip-hop artist raps, “Mumbai ya Bombay/mala kai farak nahi.” (Mumbai or Bombay/doesn’t make a difference to me.)

The accompanying video, produced by Bombay Arthouse showcases the various landscapes of the city from the colonial era buildings, the slums, the gridlocked roads and even the sea, as MC Mawali delivers his bars.
