Apr 28, 2016

On Sunday, David Gilmour paid tribute to the late Prince during his benefit performance for Teenage Cancer Trust at Royal Albert Hall in London when he segued Pink Floyd’s classic “Comfortably Numb” into Prince’s “Purple Rain.”

In the eight-minute-plus clip Gilmour shared on YouTube, as he was hitting a guitar solo for “Comfortably Numb,” he and his band effortlessly blended in a guitar solo from “Purple Rain” in an expertly seamless way that made Prince’s song feel like a natural extension within Pink Floyd’s. As purple lighting drenched the arena, the cascading notes were met with backing singers delivering the cooing final refrains from Prince’s beloved song.

The singer/guitarist recently concluded his first North American tour in more than a decade when he performed at Madison Square Garden. Gilmour’s tour resumes in Europe, beginning on June 25th in Warsaw, Poland, at Freedom Square and concludes with a four-night stand in London a The Royal Albert Hall on September 30th.
