Watch Dreamcatcher Address Global Environmental Crisis in Latest Release ‘Maison’
Accompanied by a music video, the track leads the group’s sophomore LP ‘APOCALYPSE: SAVE US’
Over the years, K-pop girl group Dreamcatcher have established their penchant for all things horror and dark fantasy, gaining authority in the sphere. However, in their latest comeback “Maison,” the septet shed their dark fantasy roots to showcase the real horror that lurks in our backyard.
Written by LEEZ and Ollounder, “Maison” embodies the group’s celebrated sonic identity with its rock influences and distortion bass, synthesizing a powerful and electric soundscape. Leading the group’s second album APOCALYPSE: SAVE US, “Maison” comes two years after the release of their Dystopia: The Tree of Language and approximately nine months after their EP Summer Holiday.
Discussing the ecological disaster and environmental crisis that the global community is currently battling, “Maison” (or ‘home’ in French) highlights the crumbling reality of the planet. The track directly calls out those who’ve turned a blind eye to the environmental catastrophe and have consciously (or subconsciously) become a part of the vicious cycle that’s damaging the planet – “Is it strangely hot?/ The laws of this planet/ It’s like it’s drying up/ It’s the same as your conscience (Hoo).”
The chorus directly appeals to the masses, making a desperate plea for immediate action as members Gahyeon and SuA sing, “Save my home in the ocean/ Save my home in the desert/ Protect me, my maison/ Please someone fight for us.” While K-pop has never turned a blind eye to social issues, Dreamcatcher are perhaps one of the first groups in the genre to employ their influence and artistry to discuss the environmental crisis to this extent; a distinctive creative call, especially in an industry where a majority of the girl groups embody themes of sweet romance, self-love and confidence.
In true Dreamcatcher fashion, the music video spins the wheel on its narrative sentiments to exhibit a tale of seven women in a post-apocalyptic world, who play the role of saviors. The video opens with a wide-angle shot of a world overcome by environmental catastrophe. To save the Earth and its limited resources, the women of Dreamcatcher open a portal in the sky, transporting themselves from a celestial place (vaguely resembling a fictional description of heaven) to ground zero.
The act’s sophomore album marks the beginning of the ‘Apocalypse’ trilogy. The 14-track LP also includes seven solo tracks, where each member has contributed in a songwriting capacity. The group is also set to perform at 2022 Primavera Sound Barcelona in June, becoming the first K-Pop group to do so.
