Watch (G)I-DLE Start a Party in The Desert in ‘Dumdi Dumdi’

The South Korean girl group aren’t ready to let summer go just yet

Aug 03, 2020

South Korean group (G)I-DLE made a comeback today with the single “Dumdi Dumdi.” The track is the group’s first comeback since April’s dark and simmering “Oh My God” off their third EP I Trust.

“Dumdi Dumdi,” written and co-produced by (G)I-DLE’s leader Soyeon, is an upbeat dance pop track with moombahton influences. The lyrics build an image of the perfect summer night, an atmosphere that’s ideal for having a great time with your friends: “The wind and waves flutter/Shake my heart like the dancers over there/Let me hear the song of this summer… The breeze of the night sea on a steaming day/An unforgettable burning night.” The hook is infectious with a tropical drum beat and the onomatopoeic refrain of “Dumdi Dumdi.”

The music video brings the message of the song alive. The six members of (G)I-DLE play various characters who meet at a motel in the middle of the desert and become friends, partying together and leaving their troubles behind. The visuals are colourful and bright, plus a little reminiscent of the fashion and vibes usually seen at American summer music festivals like Coachella and Burning Man. It’s the group’s first attempt at a summery vibe and a major contrast from darker releases like “Lion” and “Oh My God.”

The single “Dumdi Dumdi” is part of a single album of the same name and is accompanied by the B-side “I’m the Trend,” a pop number composed and written by the group’s vocalists Minnie and Yuqi with Yuto of Pentagon and producer FCM Houdini. The song was unveiled during their (G)I-DLE’s online concert ‘I-Land: Who Am I’ on July 5th, 2020.
