Watch Girls Generation’s TAEYEON ‘s Alluring Music Video ‘INVU’
The track follows the singer-songwriter’s January 2022 pre-release single ‘Can’t Control Myself’
South Korean singer-songwriter and Girls Generation’s leader TAEYEON makes a powerful comeback with her latest release “INVU.” The single, which leads the vocalist’s third album of the same name, follows a similar theme of unrequited love explored in her pre-release single, “Can’t Control Myself.”
Produced by PhD (who previously worked on fellow labelmate and SHINee member Taemin’s third EP Advice), “INVU” is a dreamy house-based pop dance track elevated by Taeyeon’s breathy vocal performance. Compared to the pop-punk “Can’t Control Myself,” “INVU” displays TAEYEON’s versatility, where she blends into various soundscapes like a dream, embodying each style and concept to its entirety.
Between “Can’t Control Myself” and “INVU,” TAEYEON examines what unrequited love can manifest into. In the pre-release single, we saw the vocalist display a shrewd understanding of love, which effectively conveyed the complexities of finding yourself in a doomed relationship and got a glimpse of how being caught in a cycle of emotional trauma and manipulation can push you away from reality. In INVU, however, the vocalist describes the mindset of one astonished at the imbalance that exists in the relationship: “Pour everything out and flop/ Suddenly at one point/ I see myself exhausted/ Even though I’m trying my best.”
The chorus sees the protagonist envious. Despite depleting and exhausting her emotional well-being to the point where they lose sight of themselves, the relationship remains one-sided with their partner benefitting from the ceaseless supply of love: “Even I abandon myself/ And lose myself more/ The irony is that you shine more/ So I-N-V-U.”
The music video takes a celestial route, portraying TAEYEON as an enchanting warrior on a quest to annihilate the love that destroyed her. Captivating, visually enchanting and loaded with serene landscapes, “INVU” submerges your senses in all respects, sending you into a sonically and visually immersive musical experience.
Featuring “Can’t Control Myself,” TAEYEON’s INVU follows the vocalist’s 2020 repackaged album Purpose. In other news, the vocalist is also part of SM Entertainment’s all-women supergroup GOT: The Beat which debuted with their punchy, genre-blending single “Step Back” earlier this year.
