Watch Green Day’s Trump-Trashing ‘Troubled Times’ Lyric Video
“Today we celebrate love and compassion more than ever,” Billie Joe Armstrong says of video, which honors Martin Luther King Jr.
On Martin Luther King Jr. day, Green Day honored the civil rights leader as well as criticized President-elect Donald Trump in their new lyric video for “Troubled Times,” a track off their recent Revolution Radio.
“Today we celebrate love and compassion more than ever,” Billie Joe Armstrong said in a statement that accompanied the Manu Viqueira and David Rodriguez Simón-created video
The video juxtaposes images of famed protests and moments of resistance and rebellion ”“ women’s suffrage, the Civil Rights Movement ”“ with images of a Trump-like figure wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat spouting hate-filled messages to the masses.
“A new day dawning / Comes without warning / So don’t think twice / We live in troubled times,” Billie Joe Armstrong warns on the track.
“Troubled Times” also contrasts the March on Washington with footage of KKK rallies, with each image a call for citizens to stand up against bigotry and tyranny.
The video ends with mushroom clouds and the specter of nuclear war.
Green Day previously made it clear how they felt about Trump during both their MTV EMA and American Music Awards performances, with the group adding a chant of “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” to “Bang Bang.”
“We didn’t rehearse it,” Armstrong later said of the AMA performance. “We’re just as much in shock as everybody else is about this”¦ But I think with the AMAs [performance], it was a good start to challenge [Trump] on all of his ignorant policies and his racism.”
