The South Korean singers play lovers who are parted in their youth but are fated to meet again 10 years later, fighting gangsters and all odds to be together
Founder and co-CEO of JYP Entertainment Park Jin Young (aka J.Y. Park) makes his return as an artist on “When We Disco,” a retro duet with Korean pop diva Sunmi. The track marks the first time both artists have worked together since Sunmi’s departure from JYP Entertainment and veteran pop group Wonder Girls.
“When We Disco” stays true to its name by bringing in the genre’s famous four-on-the-floor beats, syncopated bass lines and heavy synth. The lyrics revolve around remembering the good times in a relationship and wanting to go back to those days: “It was like magic, when we disco, when we disco/So, I still can’t forget it/I miss those days, when we disco, when we disco/Do you still remember as well?”
The music video has a late-Seventies, early-Eighties vibe, reviving the Saturday Night Fever (1977) era with its multi-coloured dance floor, hazy club setting, glimmering disco ball and glitzy wardrobe and makeup. Park and Sunmi play lovers who are parted in their youth but are fated to meet again 10 years later, fighting gangsters and all odds to be together and celebrate their love for each other and for disco. The video also features a fun reference to Park’s December 2019 single “Fever” in the form of a big, yellow sign above him and Sunmi while they dance on the street towards the end of the clip.
“When We Disco” is Park’s first comeback since releasing “Fever” which featured rapper BIBI and a cameo from Parasite (2020) actress Cho Yeojeong. While the music video for “When We Disco” dropped earlier today, the track will officially be available on streaming platforms on August 12th.
