Watch Jackson Wang aka Magic Man Explore Hopelessness in ‘Blue’

The single leads the popstar's long-awaited sophomore album 'Magic Man'

Published by

Following the launch of the pre-release singles “Blow” and “Cruel” paired with smashing appearances at live music festivals including Coachella, global popstar Jackson Wang is back with his highly anticipated studio album, Magic Man. Led by the last track of the record “Blue,” the single sees Wang rustle up a tranquil atmosphere with a mellow production and serene visual treatment.

Characterized by smooth grooves, “Blue” is a fitting single to lead an album that unearths hidden chapters from Wang’s life and admiration for the rock genre. The track also sees Wang adopt an emotive and mellow vocal approach, providing listeners with the opportunity to appreciate the rich guitar chords and crisp percussion arrangement.

“Blue” gives listeners a peek into Wang’s relationship with solitude and who he runs to when it eventually sneaks up on him: “When I’m broke and I’m stressing/ I know you’ll stay by me/ When I feel disconnected/ You’re all I need.” While it is unclear as to who Wang’s solace is, it wouldn’t be amiss to assume he finds strength from his fans in times of darkness. Another possible figure Wang may be referring to might be himself.

Ahead of the release of his sophomore album, Wang penned down a heartfelt letter touching upon several points and events that lead up to the release of Magic Man. Despite the ups and downs and life’s unexpected curve balls, the only constant that stayed beside Wang’s side were his dreams and passion; a possible saving grace highlighted in “Blue” which has helped pull him out of the darkest times of his life.

Given that “Blue” is a Team Wang production, the GOT7 member leaves no stone unturned in the visual department. Floating in a dream-like sequence, the music video finds Wang levitating as he gracefully makes his way from the gloomy skies to the fiery flames of fire before falling into a waterbody. The visual narration, color palette and minimalistic cinematography undoubtedly mirror the track’s relaxed sonic atmosphere.

Forayed by “Blue,” Magic Man marks the release of Wang’s first major musical project following GOT7’s departure from JYP Entertainment in January 2021. Since then, Wang has released several singles such as “LMLY,” “Drive You Home,” “Alone” and the self-titled single “Jackson Wang.” In March 2022, the singer surprised his fans with the release of Lost & Found – an eight-track mixtape that comprises tracks from Wang’s archives. Aside from his musical projects, Wang performed at several festivals around the world including the 2022 Coachella and 88Rising’s Head In The Clouds festival. The singer-entrepreneur hosted a party at the Marquee nightclub in Singapore this August, becoming the first international artist to host a party there. Around the same time, Wang launched a new line of summer apparel under his label Team Wang Designs.
