South Korean singer and former Wanna One member Kang Daniel dropped the pre-release single off his upcoming third EP Magenta today. Titled “Waves,” the track features prominent South Korean rapper Simon Dominic and R&B artist Jamie.
“Waves” is a blend of dancehall, hip-hop and pop. The instrumentals are a good match for Kang’s breathy vocals but Jamie and Simon Dominic do end up stealing focus with their more seasoned rap delivery and stage presence. Written by Kang, Jamie, Simon Dominic and songwriters ae.patricia and BIYA, the track encourages listeners to give in to their waves of emotion and follow their hearts’ desires.
The music video is a tropical underground dance party of sorts. Kang, Simon Dominic and Jamie are surrounded by throngs of dancers as they take turns to deliver each of their verses. The dancers perform powerful choreography over shallow water which makes for a rather majestic site and Kang eventually joins in, donning a glittery black suit as he shows off his smooth footwork. The video for “Waves” was first unveiled during Kang’s first anniversary online fan meeting ‘DAN1TYST’ on July 25th which celebrated one year since his debut.
Kang participated in writing five out of the six tracks on Magenta which is the second in his ‘color album trilogy’ series. The first was Cyan which dropped earlier this year in March and had a brighter, spring-themed vibe. According to Kang, Magenta will be a darker, more hard-hitting offering to symbolize the end of summer.
