Daft Punk are ready to take their masks off with the new documentary Daft Punk Unchained . The worldwide release of the film, which premiered on French TV in June, has yet to get a U.S. release date, but a new trailer reveals some of the doc’s guests (via Okayplayer).
Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers are among the famous collaborators and fans of the French duo to speak about their influence in the documentary. “Who revolutionized dance music the most?” West asks early in the trailer. “I think you’d say ‘Daft Punk.'”The trailer finds members Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter discussing artistic control and hiding their faces with various masks before wearing their trademark robot helmets. It jumps to their recent peak after “Get Lucky” blew up and led to a Grammy sweep in 2014. The trailer ends with one of the members appearing to take off their helmet in a desert.The French documentary premiered with English subtitles in London last weekend. Other talking heads in the film include Paul Williams, Michel Gondry, Pete Tong, Peter Lindbergh,Todd Edwards and Giorgio Moroder, the disco legend who reentered music in the past few years thanks to Daft Punk’s encouragement. Hervé Martin Delpierre directed the feature and co-wrote it with Marina Rozenman.
BBC Worldwide, the film’s distributor, noted that Daft Punk Unchained would “plunge into the unique world of the Robots” and explore their “quest for liberty and independence” from 1996 through their aforementioned Grammy night.
