Watch Kesha’s Moving Human Rights Campaign Speech

Kesha took the stage at the 2016 Nashville Equality Dinner Saturday night to accept the Human Rights Campaign’s Visibility Award and delivered a moving speech where she talked about her history with the LGBT community as well as her recent legal troubles. Kesha’s speech begins around the 9:30 mark in the video above.

“As many of you know I am going through some personal things that have been really intense and hard lately and I just want to say thank you for any support I have received,” Kesha said. Midway through her 10-minute speech, Kesha began to choke up with emotion and stepped away from the microphone to regain her composure, which sparked supportive applause from the audience.

Kesha’s speech came just weeks after the singer’s bid to file an injunction against Sony Music and Dr. Luke, the producer she claims raped and abused her, was denied by a New York judge, forcing Kesha to fulfill her contract to Luke’s Kemosabe Records. Artists like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Adele and more have voiced their support for Kesha through the ordeal. Dr. Luke has denied all the accusations against him.

“Fame is strange and unnatural and I’m grateful for it mainly because it has put me in a position where I can actually do something positive for the world, and that is really the best part of it,” Kesha told the audience. “I love writing songs and I love making music, but this is the most rewarding part of it.”

In her speech, the singer reminisced about growing up outside Nashville as a “misfit” who “gravitated toward other social outsiders, many of them in the LGBT community.” “We just knew that we were bullied for being ourselves, shamed for being different and encouraged for hiding the things that make us unique,” Kesha said. “My message today is don’t be afraid to speak up against any injustice you experience. Don’t let people scare or shame you into changing the things about you that make you unique.”
