Lilly Singh aka Superwoman goes back to her hip-hop roots with the brand new video “If Rappers Were School Teachers.” In the clip Singh transforms into Cardi B, Kendrick Lamar, Drake and DJ Khaled, parodying each of their personalities and music styles to re-imagine them as fun but informative school teachers.
Cardi takes on English while Lamar and Drake spit bars about Biology and Sex Ed respectively. DJ Khaled pops in briefly to wax poetic about Mathematics with a confident “one plus one equals… anotha one.” In addition to being a powerful reminder of the YouTube mogul’s impressive rap skills, the video sees Singh capture each rapper’s idiosyncrasies; Cardi’s signature chirps and Drake’s awkward slo-mo dance moves are present in generous dozes.
Singh is able to adapt to each artist’s flow, use their musical style and yet make it her own.”Grab his dic…tionary/Get imaginative,” she raps as Cardi on “I Write It Like That” (based on “I Like It Like That”) while Drake takes a body-positive approach on “Bod’s Plan,” (“God’s Plan”) rapping, “You’ve been growing up and things are changing for you/Hitting puberty it can be strange for a few.” Lamar’s “DNA” gets a little more literal with Singh’s lyrics: “I got molecules, got all the tools, inside my DNA/Got a sugar group/Got double loops inside my DNA.”
In addition to being one of the most kick-ass pieces of content Singh has produced, “If Rappers Were School Teachers” has audiences wishing they had teachers who rapped, with comments ranging from, “If teachers legit taught like this, I’d ace every test,” to “This is how they should teach us stuff in school.”
