The Mumbai rapper slams bigotry and homophobia in a new song produced by Srinagar hip hop artist Shyn9 aka Shayan Nabi
There’s a mix of satire and all-out caustic rhymes on Mumbai rapper A-List aka Ashwini Mishra’s new song and music video, “Say No To 377.” Mishra speaks up against religious homophobia and Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, first overturned in 2009, legalizing consensual homosexual activity, but later reinstated in December last year, thereby criminalizing homosexuality in India.
In addition to the legal judgment, Mishra calls out India’s religious sections for rallying against gays: “I don’t care if you follow your religion/Hindu, Muslim or Christian/Sikh, Jew, a Buddhist or Jain/A bigot is a bigot/The bullshit is lame.” Produced by Srinagar hip hop artist and producer Shayan Nabi aka Shyn9, “Say No To 377” includes a music video directed by Kolkata filmmaker Gairik Sarkar of Notsoabsolute Films, featuring footage of people protesting The Supreme Court’s December ruling and shots of Mishra rapping. Gairik has previously shot Kolkata acoustic rock band Ifs and Buts’s music video for “Tourist.”
