Watch: New York DJ-Filmmaker and Basketballer Bobbito Garcia Tells His Story in New Documentary

The likes of Stevie Wonder, Questlove, Chuck D and more appear in the crowdfunded release

Published by

What connects basketball, hip-hop and sneaker culture? The name that makes for a neat Venn diagram is New York City’s Bobbito Garcia. Rock Rubber 45s is Garcia’s third film but this time, he trains the camera towards his own life and times, covering his life as a radio host (with fellow DJ Stretch Armstrong aka Adrian Bartos), street basketball star, sneaker collector and designer and DJ.

While his previous documentaries on basketball (Doin’ It in the Park: Pick-up Basketball, NYC) and his shared radio show (Stretch and Bobbito: Radio that Changed Lives) were picked up by TV and digital networks, they were crowdfunded as well. Garcia, 51, takes the crowdfunding route for Rock Rubber 45s too, with a target of $30,000 by June 21st.

In the 96-minute documentary, which receives its theatrical release on June 28th in New York City, Garcia sits down with old friends and talks about the journey so far, featuring actors like Rosie Perez, Michael Rapaport, Lin-Manuel Miranda and musicians ranging from Stevie Wonder to Questlove, amongst several others.

Considering Garcia’s co-host and hip-hop proponent Stretch Armstrong was in India recently, we hope that Rock Rubber 45s finds its way to the country soon, preferably with its filmmaker in tow.
