So what if he isn’t always gigging across the country? Kolkata pop artist Nischay Parekh knows how to keep his audience interested even as he takes breaks from the stage to study, and pursue various other music stints outside India. The 21-year-old singer/songwriter released his debut album Ocean, nearly a year ago and in May this year, launched a trippy video for the song “Panda.” Now, Parekh along with drummer and percussionist Jivraj Singh and keyboardist George Matthew Dylan Varner-Hartley, have released a live version of their hooky title track “Ocean.” Says Parekh about the video, which was shot by filmmaker Aditya Kapur from Kolkata-based production house, Autorickshaw Productions, “We’re playing the song live, so this video is a way to have a record of how we re-imagined the song.”

The video for “Ocean” was shot at drummer Singh’s jam pad in Kolkata in January this year, when keyboardist Varner-Hartley was still performing with Parekh. Singh’s jam pad was also where experimental rock act PINKNOISE’s video for their 2013 single “Bumble Bee” was shot. Says Parekh, “It [the jam room] is kind of like the Requirement Room from Harry Potter. It just changes the way it looks based on who’s inside.”

Fresh from his performance at music and surf festival Covelong Point in Chennai, Parekh has two gigs in October ”“ one at Bengaluru’s The Humming Tree and another jamming with Kolkata alt rock band Skinny Alley’s vocalist Jayashree Singh and guitarist Amyt Datta, at the Princeton Club in Kolkata, on October 10th. Says Parekh about jamming on songs from Ocean with Singh and Datta, “They’ll guest on most of the songs. I’ve given them the music but they kinda know the songs already. I’m sure it’s going to be really interesting.” Also coming up for Parekh is a stint at the Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo in November. Says Parekh, “Hopefully, I’ll get some of the musicians I meet at the academy to collaborate with Jivraj and me on the next album.”
