Watch Paul McCartney Play ‘Hard Day’s Night’ for First Time in 51 Years

Macca kicks off 2016 'One On One' tour with first live version of Beatles classic as a solo artist

Paul McCartney promised that his 2016 One On One Tour would offer “no shortage of surprises,” and he was true to his word at the kickoff show Wednesday night at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The musician opened up the show with “A Hard Day’s Night,” the first time he’d ever done the song as a solo artist. The 38-song marathon concert also featured the first “Love Me Do” of his solo career along with the Quarryman song “In Spite of All the Danger” (unplayed since 2005), “The Fool on the Hill” (unplayed since 2003), “You Won’t See Me” (unplayed since 2004) and “FourFiveSeconds,” his 2015 collaboration with Kanye West and Rihanna.

McCartney last sang “A Hard Day’s Night” in concert when the Beatles played the Cow Palace in Daly City, California on August 31st, 1965, though Terry Bradshaw did coax him into a brief rendition of the song during halftime of the Super Bowl in 2002. It had been even longer since he had performed “Love Me Do.” The Beatles last played it at the Playhouse Theater in London on October 16th, 1963. Ringo Starr, however, did perform it regularly on his 2000 tour with the All Starr Band.

In addition to those super rarities, McCartney’s opening show was heavy on standards like “Band on the Run,” “Blackbird,” “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” “Live and Let Die,” “Hey Jude” and “Yesterday.” He also played three tracks (“New,” “Queenie Eye” and “Save Us”) from his 2013 solo album New. The show wrapped up with “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End” from Abbey Road.

The tour, which is hitting arenas and stadiums, continues on Friday night at the Moda Center in Portland, Oregon and runs through August 13th at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, though new dates continue to be added.
