Watch Peter Cat Recording Co. Revisit A Wedding for ‘Floated By’ Music Video

Did singer-guitarist Suryakant Sawhney think video footage from his wedding would become a part of his band Peter Cat Recording Co.’s new music video? “Of course I did,” Sawhney says in a manner that is so characteristically him we can’t tell if he’s joking or not, especially considering he’s also a filmmaker.

The first song off their upcoming third album Bismillah ”“ and the second with French label Panache after 2018’s compilation Portrait of a Time: 2010-2016 ”“ is the horn section-aided “Floated By.” It’s set to footage shot by Sawhney, filmmakers Sachin Pillai and Nitish Kanjilal during the singer’s wedding to video journalist, filmmaker and photographer Surabhi Tandon, celebrated in the hill town of Kasauli.

Sawhney says about using wedding footage to the groovy waltz-rock song of reminiscence, “Hopefully it’s not a many-a-time-in-a-lifetime event. You put all this money in making the place look nice and you can’t fake that set, you can’t fake those people actually having a good time and people being really emotional and having an intense time.” Scenes from wedding rituals and friends and family shaking a leg are spliced with newly shot footage of Sawhney, in groom’s attire, wandering a forest and joining his bandmates ”“ Kartik Pillai, Dhruv Bhola, Karan Singh and Rohit Gupta ”“ in a car.

“Floated By” is one of the oldest songs on Bismillah, which will release sometime in June. There’s also songs like “Memory Box” which has been a part of the band’s live set for about four years now, but Sawhney says nothing sounds the same as before. The singer says “Floated By” was recorded in Paris last year. It also features additional drum work from Frenchmen Robin Leduc and trumpet by jazz composer Jean-Baptiste Bridon.

It’ll be two years since the band began work on Bismillah by the time it releases later this year. One thing the band is happier for is releasing music videos at the same time as songs. Sawhney says, “We have two or three singles and the album will be out in June. We’re making three or four videos, basically. Usually our videos come out a year after the album, so this time we said, ”˜Okay, seven years later it’s time to get it right.’”
