Watch Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt in the Trailer for ‘Gully Boy’

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, the film brings the culture of India's underground hip-hop scene to mainstream screens

The first trailer of the highly-anticipated Gully Boy dropped today, giving fans a glimpse into the world of India’s underground hip-hop scene and the lives of the rappers who brought indie hip-hop to the fore.

Directed by filmmaker Zoya Akhtar (2011’s Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara, 2015’s Dil Dhadakne Do,) Gully Boy follows the story of Naved Shaikh, an underground rapper portrayed by Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, who dreams of making it big as a hip-hop star. Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt steals attention immediately as Sakina, Shaikh’s fiery girlfriend who supports his dreams but also has her own challenges to conquer.

Set to original tracks “Azaadi” and “Apna Time Aayega” composed by Chandigarh/Mumbai producer Dub Sharma and hip-hop artist Divine, the trailer for Gully Boy shows both characters fighting societal norms, expectations and disapproving family members as they work towards achieving their dreams.

Gully Boy was inspired by the lives of Indian rappers Divine and Naezy who rose to fame thanks to their raw, honest lyricism about growing up in Mumbai. The film is set to release on February 14th, 2019.

In addition to prominent actors like Kalki Koechlin and Vijay Raaz in its cast, Gully Boy will reportedly feature cameos from several members of the Indian hip-hop scene, including Divine. The trailer has garnered massive traction online, with fans already making comparisons to the 2002 Eminem-starrer 8 Mile which followed a rapper’s rise in the American underground hip-hop community.
