Last week, Mumbai indie group Sharma and the Besharams dropped brand new music in the shape of the folk-rock track “Ganga.”

The new song – part of the band’s upcoming EP बीdesi – includes captivating vocals by frontwoman Vasuda Sharma, a steady groove from drummer Rahul Hariharan, a booming bassline by Chirayu Vedekar and a slick banjo solo from Chaitanya Bhaidkar. The band also called upon guest artists to fill up the song which included pianist Jayakrishnan Unnithan, dholak player Yusuf Ji, flautist Rajat Prasanna and violinist Shravan Sridhar.

The track’s accompanying video sees all the musicians performing the song at Mumbai’s Island City Studios. Sharma says, “’Ganga’ is a Bhojpuri folk song, singing [about] the glory of the sacred river believed to purify one’s soul and wash away all sins. The river Ganga is considered a tirtha which means a crossing point between heaven and earth.”

The band’s new record बीdesi releases on September 15th with an EP launch gig scheduled for September 21st in Mumbai.
