Watch: Singer-Songwriter Sanjeeta Bhattacharya’s Heart-Wrenching Video for ‘I Will Wait’

New Delhi singer-songwriter Sanjeeta Bhattacharya is no stranger to the arts. It runs in her family, considering she’s the daughter of renowned painter Sanjay Bhattacharya. At age four, Bhattacharya began training as an Indian classical vocalist and simultaneously also learnt the Indian classical dance form Kathak. After passing out from school she decided to pursue singing and enrolled at Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 2013 and studied performance. “[At Berklee] I was exposed to all kinds of styles [of music] from Latin music to Balkan music and even jazz,” says Bhattacharya.  

Since her return to India last year, Bhattacharya has showcased an artistic diversity to become quite a regular on the indie gig circuit in New Delhi as well as other cities. “I got into the scene mainly because of my friends who were already in it. It kind of happened really quickly,” she explains. The 22-year old vocalist is now out with her first offering from her upcoming debut EP Yatra, the somber “I Will Wait,” accompanied by a heart-wrenching music video.   

In the clip, Bhattacharya is seen alongside New Delhi actor Kush Kukreja portraying a couple who have broken up and through the video are flashbacks of when they were together to the present day in which Bhattacharya is packing and leaving for another place. The solemn track interplays light guitar parts and string arrangements that compliment Bhattacharya’s vocals to the tee. The singer-songwriter says about the lyrics, “It is about being in love with somebody and everything is perfect but then you fall for someone else. It is very easy to fall in love with people. But you know it can’t happen, you can’t possibly be with both of them and you have to let go of the person you fell in love with, it is about love that can’t be.”

Yatra, which is slated to release in March 2018 will feature around five songs that the vocalist is currently recording at Gurgaon-based Ferris Wheel Studios. “I don’t play an instrument, so I pretty much just write the words, come up with the melodies and I have friends who play and we arrange them together,” says the young singer. The EP, which draws inspiration from the places and journeys the singer has undertaken, is going to be trilingual, featuring songs in Bengali, English and Spanish. Says Bhattacharya, “I can speak basic Spanish and the language is also very romantic itself so it is easy to write in.” The record will feature love songs, tracks about believing in oneself and one about Bhattacharya’s grandmother.
