Watch Taeyang and Jimin’s Dazzling Video for “Vibe”
The K-pop collaboration of the decade is finally here
After what seems like years of waiting (although it’s literally just been a week) legendary singer-songwriter Taeyang has unveiled “Vibe,” his new single in collaboration with BTS’ Jimin. The Big Bang member officially confirmed on January 4th that he would be working with Jimin, but had dropped hints even before that via now-deleted pictures on his Instagram account. Now, after nearly 10 days of sleek teasers and jittery waiting, the K-pop collaboration of the decade is finally here.
“Vibe” was co-written by Taeyang and singer-songwriter Vince and co-composed by Taeyang, Vince, Jimin, The Black Label’s Teddy Park, Kush and 24. The single blends pop and R&B with dashes of funk-influenced guitar to create an upbeat and positive mood. What makes it an instant earworm, however, are Taeyang and Jimin’s harmonized vocals during the chorus: “You know we got that vibe baby (till the sun rises)/ Look at me, look at me, I got the vibe/ You know we got that vibe baby (till the sun sets)/ Look at you, look at you, you got the vibe/ I can feel it, it’s a vibe.” The track is a playful love song and serves as a brilliant medium for Taeyang and Jimin to experiment with their similar high vocal tones.
The music video for the track features the two artists on sprawling stages, bathed in spotlights as they –for the lack of a better word — vibe together and perform sharp, synchronized choreography. The duo are charismatic in their solo shots and have great chemistry as they perform the track together. It’s a playful and sexy clip that comes off as relaxed, but also glamorous, allowing Taeyang and Jimin — both incredibly accomplished dancers — to show off their moves.
“Vibe” is an immensely important moment in K-pop history because it brings together two icons in the industry who have been integral in shaping Asian global pop culture. Big Bang’s longstanding legacy and BTS’ incomparably powerful influence combined is an unprecedented phenomenon. Taeyang and Jimin’s collaboration also unites the two generations of K-pop they represent — the Second and Third Generation respectively — and serves as a gift to fans of both bands.
