The Girls Generation leader's new track is a soft, bright ballad about spending time with loved ones
South Korean singer-songwriter Taeyeon made her first comeback of the year today with “Happy,” a soft, bright ballad about spending time with loved ones. “Happy” is the Girls Generation leader’s first release since she dropped her second studio album Purpose in 2019.
In the video for “Happy,” Taeyeon is seen spending a day at home. She seems to be in a great mood as she listens to music, does her chores and day dreams in-between of walking through fields of flowers. She finds old photographs and knick knacks and reminisces on joyful memories before going to bed and dreaming of singing surrounded by flowers.
“Happy” packs in a ton of nostalgia, not just in its Nineties-esque pastel visuals but also with a surprising touch of Fifties doo-wop. There’s some pop and R&B packed in as well but the instrumentation keeps it minimal to allow Taeyeon’s powerful vocals free reign. The lyrics are heartwarming and sweet, using the imagery of winter melting to spring to create the feeling of being safe in a loved one’s arms, “Tonight I’m Happy/A cozy dream/The frozen season melts with our warmth/A wonderful night I dream in your arms/Let’s whisper our wishes for a long time/We’re together I’m Happy/This dream will last forever.”
