Watch Twice’s Futuristic and Y2K-Inspired Music Video ‘Talk That Talk’

Twice fandom Once have a lot to celebrate this year. From the group’s contract renewal with JYP Entertainment affirming their plans to release music together for a long time to Nayeon’s pop galore solo debut and now a solid seven-track full-group EP; the women of Twice are truly unstoppable. 

Making their Korean group comeback after nine months, Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung and Tzuyu shimmer under the spotlight with the pop-synth single “Talk That Talk.” Leading their latest EP Between 1&2, the track is accompanied by a visually compelling music video that mixes the nostalgia of Y2K motifs with sleek futuristic aesthetics. 

Written by danke (lalala studio), Mrch and Woo Min Lee, “Talk That Talk” is a quintessential love track expressing the protagonist’s desire for more than just conversations. It’s a close reflection of their 2021 single “Scientist,” where the group demanded more than calculated risks while approaching love. With lines like “A to Z you are quite sweet / But I wanna skip / But the more important thing / Get straight to the point” and “Baby, you know the answer, yes or yes/ Don’t wanna waste time with the push-and-pull/ Dare to say it now, want it, one to ten/ Let’s get started right now,” Twice forgo the archaic idea of women having to be coy and timid in matters of love. 

Producers Mrch and Woo Min Lee meld a catchy Nineties-pop-inspired melody with an addictive hook. Considering Twice’s vocal prowess, the pop-synth composition is a fitting sound for the group to highlight their iridescent vocal colors. Nostalgia echoes in the pre-chorus with the interpolation of a line from Twice’s 2018 hit single “Yes or Yes,” “Baby, you know the answer, yes or yes.”

While the track is a great throwback to the past, the music video wields the best of Y2K and futuristic elements. Design-driven, aesthetically pleasing and alluring, the video’s storyline sees the group cosplay as spies split into three groups – ‘Pathfinder,’ ‘Archive,’ and ‘Cryptography.’ The music video ends with a QR code flashing on the screen. When scanned it redirects users to the group’s Instagram post where they officially announced their fandom name.

Lead by “Talk That Talk,” Twice’s 11th EP Between 1&2 houses six additional tracks titled “Queen of Hearts,” “Basics” (co-written by Chaeyoung), “Trouble,” “Brave,” “Gone” and “When We Were Kids” (both co-written by Dahyun). In other news, the group’s leader Jihyo has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be temporarily absent from the group’s immediate promotional activities to focus on her recovery.
