The South Korean rock band have finally dropped their debut EP, 'Hello, World!'
South Korean rookie rock band Xdinary Heroes dropped their first EP Hello, World! today, led by the single “Test Me.” The release marks the group’s first comeback since their December 2021 debut with the pop-punk single, “Happy Death Day.”
The band bring back their vibrant pop-punk energy on “Test Me” but without the gritty viciousness we previously heard on “Happy Death Day”; instead, the tone here aims at excitement and wholesome chaos, led by a faster tempo and brighter guitar. The lyrics explore individuality and having the strength to do what you want to do with your life, and the band dare anyone to try and get in their way: “A weirdo like no other, that’s me/ I’m not into what others want me to do… Yes, I’m a freak/ When everyone else is laughing, I can’t myself/ There’s an answer already/ But go on, you can test me.”
Xdinary Heroes have built a brand that fights to take down the system, and the video for “Test Me” adds to this narrative. After being unfairly disqualified from a rigged battle-of-the-bands style contest, the sextet come up with a chaotic plan to claw their way back into the running and win. The members devise hilarious schemes, which include distracting security and hacking, to put themselves into the competition again and go up against their nemesis – an eight-limbed android named Roboctopuss. An intense musical showdown begins before Roboctopuss finally explodes, allowing the protagonists to revel in their well-earned triumph.
Xdinary Heroes is JYP Entertainment’s first band to follow the highly popular pop-rock act DAY6 (who debuted back in 2015), and ranked second on Rolling Stone India‘s list of the ‘10 Best K-pop Debuts of 2021.’ Hello, World! comprises a total of six songs including “Test Me,” and sees the band explore various branches and blends of pop and rock.
