Indie/folk pop favorites When Chai Met Toast bring back the familiar warmth of banjo and acoustic guitar on their new track “Kahaani,” which also marks the first song by the Kochi-based band that’s entirely sung in Hindi.

The third single off their upcoming debut album When We Feel Young, When Chai Met Toast enlisted seasoned singer-songwriter Ankur Tewari as lyricist for the gentle, quieter folk song. Previously, the quartet launched shimmering dance rock on “Maybe I Can Fly” and an emotional nostalgia-leaning pop song with the title track. “Kahaani” details a sense of acceptance around imperfect or lost love.

The band said in a statement, “We hope ‘Kahaani’ is a pleasant surprise for our fans who have often requested for songs in different languages, including Hindi. We love how different languages help convey thoughts in different ways to people. When we composed ‘Kahaani,’ we felt the tune would fit perfectly for a Hindi song and thought Hindi words would do justice to the track. Since we weren’t native Hindi speakers, we approached Ankur Tewari to pen the words for the song.”

While the band told us that they’re well aware about gigs not being on the table for a while in terms of promotional plans, When Chai Met Toast have been releasing acoustic performances of new songs as part of their video series Nature Tapes. When We Feel Young is slated to be out later this year.
