EXO has just released “Crown,” the explosive lead single from their eighth studio album, Reverxe. And it just proves that even after 14 years, the group’s status as one of the most influential in K-pop remains as is. The song hits you with a hybrid hard dance track, mixing Atlanta trap drums, gritty heavy metal guitar riffs, and sleek EDM synths that create a wall of sound as massive as their legacy. Its sharp sirens and detailed production play out like a cinematic experience, making “Crown” feel fresh and experimental while still being quintessentially EXO.

The vocal performance, this time anchored in D.O.’s brilliant, soulful runs and the group’s signature rich harmonies, reiterates why EXO’s vocal line is widely considered the best in the industry.  Chanyeol’s rap, as usual, cuts through the dense mix, while the addition of Lay’s voice — making a grand return for this comeback — adds a layer of nostalgia and power to the same. While the absence of Chen, Baekhyun, and Xiumin (EXO-CBX) is deeply felt due to their ongoing contractual fallout with SM Entertainment, the remaining six — Suho, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, Sehun, and Lay — ensure the band’s legacy never fails. You feel that sense of desperation in the song and in their performance, proving that even as a six-member unit, the “EXO DNA” of absolute excellence is still the same.

“Crown” is basically EXO’s love letter to EXO-L. They treat the fandom like a literal crown — something so precious that they’d do anything to protect it. The song is about that “ride-or-die” loyalty, with the lyrics saying, “Even if it breaks me, I’m giving everything to keep this crown safe for you.” But the song also goes deep into the whole fame game and all the pressure it brings, including the weight of being EXO, which is mirrored in the “weight” of this crown. It’s a candid reflection of EXO’s own journey through the cutthroat music industry, about how far they’ve come, and that they aren’t even close to handing over the crown anytime soon.

Set against a dramatic, lightning-struck ruin, the members look regal as they bridge the gap between their 2012 “MAMA” debut and the present day. It’s a visceral music video that hits you with major “Monster” era nostalgia. The choreography brings that signature, sharp “SMP” (SM Music Performance) intensity, with a “tight grip” motif anchoring the whole routine — and, of course, Kai proves once again why he’s in a league of his own.

Choreographed by Jayrick and Bada Lee to perfectly match the track’s tempo, the dance features formations that blend tight teamwork with individual highlights. The spotlight moment is definitely the one where the members reach out to snatch the titular crown from the air and place it on their heads. Thanks to the backup dancers, who add to and bring this fictional realm to life, making the whole visual experience feel incredibly 3D.

“Crown” is quite literally the crown jewel of the Reverxe album because it refuses to play safe and builds on the theme “return of the king” in the truest sense. The song respects the past while charging headfirst into a new, darker soundscape, showing how, despite lineup changes and years of hiatus, EXO’s impact is less about nostalgia and more about staying power. They aren’t just part of the K-pop conversation; they are the conversation.
