Will Ferrell and Chad Smith’s Next Drum-Off Target: Lars Ulrich

Ferrell claims the thrash-metal drummer looks "eerily similar" to him and Chili Peppers drummer

Metallica’s Lars Ulrich

Now that Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith have settled their doppelgänger-fueled rivalry with a drum-off on The Tonight Show, they’ve set their sights on another supposed lookalike drum-off target: Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. “Lars gets pissed because he gets mistaken for both me and Chad Smith,” Ferrell told Spin recently. “He can settle that score now, too.” Smith added, “There it is. The gauntlet is down.”

The prickly pair brought up Ulrich, whom Ferrell said looked “eerily similar” to the two of them, sometime after their bout. They said that the Metallica cofounder was still unaware of their plans to drum against him competitively. But regardless of Ulrich’s involvement, Ferrell had previously told ROLLING STONE that his rivalry with Smith is one “that will go on until the end of time.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Smith recalled the first time he encountered Ferrell, at an after-party for the movie The Ladies Man, and the actor acknowledged their resemblance. “You just looked me up and down really quick and said, ‘You’re very handsome,'” the professional drummer said.  “I was like, ‘God, he’s funny.'”

The guys also offered up their thoughts on EDM, though they skewed toward the skeptical. “I gotta give them credit for guys who can make hundreds of thousands of dollars for literally pushing a button,” Ferrell said. Smith rejoined, “That’s a good gig, you know? There’s not a lot overhead. There’s no checked luggage. Just carry on your computer, turn it on, push a button, good to go.”

Finally, they weighed in on Weezer drummer Pat Wilson’s ability to catch Frisbees mid-set while not missing a beat. Their opinion on that feat was also skeptical. “Frisbees? I’ve seen Will catch ninja stars,” Smith said.

“I once caught a marlin while I was drumming,” Ferrell said. “We once had a drum-off on the deck of a boat. And I snagged a marlin right out of the air.”
