From a collaborative song to a Shaggy cover, here are four songs paying tribute to womanhood
“#Sisterhood” by the Sisterhood Collective
On her latest Geetu Unplugged project, veteran singer-songwriter Geetu Hinduja has rounded up several women artists from Mumbai — ace singer-songwriters Vasuda Sharma, Vivienne Pocha, Alisha Pais and Shubhangi Joshi, drummer Naama Choonawala, accordion-player Mynah Marie and violinist Nandini Shankar. These seven women, the #Sisterhood Collective, go on to sing about how “Sisterhood calls/Sisterhood heals/Sisterhood creates memories tonight” to an anthemic tune.
“Moko Kahaan” by The Music Yantra
This fusion rock single helmed by world music act Maati Baani unites a bunch of independent musicians from across the globe who build a song out of saint Kabir’s eponymous verse. “Moko Kahaan” features Nirali Kartik on vocals, Indian/American violinist Anaar Stephens, Brazilian guitarist Lari Basilio, bassist Shalini Mohan [of folk rock band Lagori], American/Iranian musician Sahba Motallebi on the tar and German drummer Sina Doering in a playthrough-style video showing off their skills.
“Strength of a Woman” by Tanya Nambiar
On her latest single and Women’s Day tribute, Delhi-based singer songwriter Tanya Nambiar collaborates with a few musician friends [Abhishek Lal on guitars, Vishal Dixit on keys and producer Rohan Mehra] to take on rapper Shaggy’s single “Strength of a Woman”. The result is a quiet, downtempo cover with a few bluesy melodies creeping into the originally reggae hit.
“Mother O’ Mine” by Beat Hierarchy
