Yashraj Drops Fiery New Track ‘Sanatan’

Mumbai hip-hop artist closes out the year with a dedication to his hometown

Mumbai rapper Yashraj takes a step away from the disco dreams of his EP Meri Jaan Pehle Naach with his new song “Sanatan,” released on Dec. 30, 2024.

The track, produced by the duo Neversober (comprising Soham Mukherji and Riz Shain), is said to be inspired by Mumbai. A press release adds, “‘Sanatan’ brings Mumbai’s essence to life through primal, percussion-heavy rhythms and sharp storytelling, reflecting the hunger, grit, and ambition that defines the city’s spirit.”

The press release adds that the “Dhundhala” and “Ishq Nachaawe” rapper gets autobiographical about his journey, from “middle-class mindset” to “societal expectations” and personal ambitions revolving around being a hip-hop artist who are now more than ever likely to get typecast. “Infused with anecdotes and reflections from his own life, ‘Sanatan’ balances thought-provoking lyrics with grand, cinematic production, delivering an immersive sonic experience that is both raw and refined,” the press release adds.

Yashraj adds in a statement, “Being a Punjabi from Mumbai, growing up around Marathi friends, living in a Gujarati area, studying in a school built by Parsis, and a college run by Sindhis — this is the essence of the city I call home. It’s my roots, my reality, and my connection with Mumbai that drives this track. I Am Mumbai.”

“Sanatan” caps off a hugely successful year in terms of artistic flair and visibility for Yashraj. It started on the back of the late 2023 release “Ishq Nachaawe” with producer Karan Kanchan and singer-composer Rashmeet Kaur for the soundtrack to coming-of-age movie Kho Gaye Hum Kahan and built up to singles like “Toast,” the title track to the film Murder Mubarak and of course, Meri Jaan Pehle Naach. Prominent hip-hop artists like King (“Suits & Streets”) and Raftaar (“Dehshat Ho”) also brought him in for their projects.
