The popular Korean drama will return December 26, while the final season will premiere in 2025
Squid Game‘s second season has a release date at last, as Netflix announced on Wednesday that the Korean mega-hit will return on December 26 more than three years after season 1 first premiered in September 2021.
The show’s third and final season will air sometime in 2025, Netflix said, with the date announced in a video.
Squid Game became one of Netflix’s most popular shows of all time, and the show earned 14 Emmy nominations. Lee Jung-jae won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, becoming the first Asian actor to win for a non-English role. Squid Game inspired a reality show spinoff, though that program caught some controversy as several contestants told Rolling Stone that the program was “cruel” and “rigged.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game’s writer, director and executive producer, shared a letter about the new season as well, telling fans that he was “thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of the story.”
“We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride,” Dong-hyuk wrote. “I hope you’re excited for what’s to come. Thank you, always, and see you soon, everyone.”
The full synopsis of season 2 is as follows: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it.”
