Yung Sammy Flexes on DESI TRILL Song ‘The Intro’
The Delhi NCR-raised, Nigerian rapper fires the opening missive on ‘DESI TRILL Presents… Brown Is Everywhere’ EP
Delhi NCR-based Nigerian rapper Yung Sammy reintroduces himself to a whole new audience on DESI TRILL‘s new song “The Intro,” which serves as the opening track to the Desi-focused movement’s debut EP DESI TRILL Presents… Brown Is Everywhere.
At the heart of the song is Yung Sammy switching up between not just Hindi and English, but also rapping in Gujari for the first time. He says, “‘The Intro’ was something like a start of my career and a new journey – not just with DESI TRILL but for me as well. It was something I felt that, ‘Yaar I need something to explain myself.’ Every time, I would get asked, ‘Aapko Hindi kaise aati hai?’ (How do you know Hindi?) So this song is my answer to questions that people usually ask me.”
Getting signed to DESI TRILL – the label and movement co-founded by U.K. veteran Shabz Naqvi and Roc Nation’s Ty-Ty Smith in 2023 – came for Sammy at a time when he needed it. Originally ‘The Intro’ was written for hip-hop reality show MTV Hustle 3.0 where he intended to compete. “When that got canceled, I got signed to DESI TRILL. This is the first track I played to Shabz. He was like, ‘Let’s drop this as the opening track on the EP,’” the rapper says.
As soon as he was signed to DESI TRILL, Sammy took up a verse on the remix of the movement’s title track ‘Desi Trill’ that originally brought together DJ LYAN, Chip and Malkit Singh in late 2023. Now, with the release of “The Intro” on Brown Is Everywhere, Yung Sammy feels at home. He says, “DESI TRILL is family now. I got signed at a point of time when I thought I would stop rapping. I was selected for MTV Hustle, and then for one reason or another, it got canceled. Within a week of that, I got signed to DESI TRILL. It’s been a life-changing experience. It’s a long journey and I feel we’ll achieve our goals. The vision of DESI TRILL and my vision are matching, so it’s going to be a great one.”
The Gujari bar on “The Intro” was a runaway hit even before the song was out, when Sammy spit rhymes in a podcast interview that went viral among Gujar communities. Sammy says the full bar is his way of dropping a hint that he intends to rap in many languages. “I have a Punjabi track on the way, in my EP. I have Haryanvi and English and Hindi [songs], of course. So you can expect many languages from me,” he says.
