ZAMAN Releases Refreshing Electro-Pop Song ‘Blue Bird’

Srinagar-bred singer-songwriter Mahdi Hussain aka ZAMAN, grew up exposed to Bollywood music and Kashmiri folk music. However, Hussain preferred uptempo English songs a lot more. He says, “I guess because I could dance to them.” After ad-libbing to a few of his favorite songs on YouTube, Hussain began writing his own material while in college. Once he moved to Mumbai in 2017, he says, “I found a lot of people who just made music because they wanted to, so you could say in a way, the city and the people probably brought it out of me, I suppose.”

Now, the singer-songwriter is out with his newest single, the catchy “Blue Bird.” In this interview with Rolling Stone India, Hussain talks to us about the new song and his future plans. Read below.  

What can you tell us about “Blue Bird?”

I wrote the song ‘Blue Bird’ with the idea of being one with nature. I realized that I was consumed with a lot of superfluous things, the internet to be precise and I just wanted to step away. I remember waking up early one day in the morning and just walking barefoot on the grass outside. When the ground was all wet with the morning due. I liked how it felt against my feet. It gave me a sense of calm, something I had not felt in a long time. I think that is where the idea stemmed from. But then I realized the most amount of calm I had ever felt was with this person that I was with, so you could say the song somehow morphed into my relationship with her where she replaces nature.

What’s next?

I am trying to write more songs in the R&B space, something that I have found I am more comfortable with, vocally. I have a couple of new songs that I am planning to release this year as collaborations, also a possible EP if things work out, and would definitely want to perform live music in front of people.
