10 Manhwa Series and Webtoons That Can Be Turned into Excellent K-Dramas
Manhwa provides one of the best templates for creating dramas since Webtoon live-action clips starring the likes of BTS, TXT, ENHYPEN, Cha Eun-woo, and IU might translate into gripping K-dramas
In the modern era, manhwa – or South Korean Webtoons – has spread worldwide, and their appeal has spawned a plethora of television and film adaptations. The primary reason I have always enjoyed reading manhwa series is that they are extremely well-written, beautifully presented, and unquestionably capable of hooking readers and keeping them engaged for weeks or even months on end. The finest templates to employ while creating dramas are definitely webtoons, particularly in the Asian entertainment landscape, where South Korea has emerged as one of the pioneers. We are all familiar with the fact that some of the best K-dramas to date have been inspired by some incredibly well-received manhwa series, a trend that looks like it will continue.
Speaking of me, I enjoy reading in general, and (as I mentioned earlier) especially enjoy reading manhwa. So, here’s a listicle outlining 10 fantastic manhwa series with their live-action clips starring BTS, TXT, ENHYPEN, Cha Eun-woo, IU, Lee Jun-ho, and other stars that might make for some remarkable Korean drama adaptations.
The Villainess is a Marionette
Princess Kayena Hill is both vicious and gorgeous. Regef, her brother, uses her as a marionette to usurp the throne. This well-known webtoon is essentially a reincarnation story, and while reading it, a working woman senses an uncanny affinity with Kayena. One day, she is slain by a co-worker and, bizarrely, resurrects as the princess. Following this incident, Kayena engages in a tussle with Regef to seize control, but seeks Duke Raffaello’s help in the process.
The promotional live-action trailer of the webcomic stars Cha Eun-woo as the frigid Duke, Han So-hee as the eponymous villainess, and Lee Soo-hyuk as her malevolent brother. Their aesthetics and chemistry look utterly amazing!
7 Fates: Chako
Zeha awakens in a hospital in the lawless city of Sin-si with no recollection of what transpired following an encounter with an enigmatic man. He soon discovers that vile creatures called ‘beom’ who resemble tigers are ravaging the city. Could this be resolved by the seven men who are brought together by fate? That’s 7 Fates: Chakho, featuring BTS.
The story is based on Joseon Dynasty Korean folklore called ‘Chakhogapsa.’ The ‘chakho,’ a beom/tiger-hunting group, is made up of seven young men. They include Dogeon (RM), a criminal expert with exceptional skills, and Hwan (Jin), who tragically lost his family to a tiger attack. Suga is Cein, who once escaped from a tiger’s maw, and J-Hope is Hosu, who was once nearly killed by a tiger after being captured. Jimin as Haru is the wise, ancient rock-turned-human who guarded the gateway to the beom realm. V plays Jooan, a gentle and loving character who’s fallen for a tiger, while Jungkook, as Zeha, is half-human and half-tiger, something only he knows. Just imagine this plot getting a K-drama twist with the BTS boys!
The Star Seekers
Magical idols rule the roost in the age of magic. Star One, an ordinary idol group, is suddenly bestowed with mystical skills to fight a sinister foe with superpowers in a bid to save the world. TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT) plays the fictitious band in the live-action video for The Star Seekers. Given the brilliant footage with TXT in their webtoon avatars, The Star Seekers has the potential to be turned into a great drama, with the real idols working wonders in their reel personas.
Dark Moon: The Blood Altar
Top Riverfield students from two rival schools are also vampires and werewolves. When Sooha visits Riverfield, the boys are oddly drawn to her. Their pasts slowly begin to emerge as catastrophic events rock the community. In line with the webtoon, seven vampires attending Decelis Academy are played by ENHYPEN members in Dark Moon: The Blood Altar, a South Korean media brand and shared fictional universe based on characters drawn from the ENHYPEN idols. Watch the official story film of Dark Moon below, which, despite its brief runtime, is a visual feast.
The Siren
Aria is the last siren, a demon whose singing has the power to enchant people. She is bound and forced to sing before royalty until she sputters blood. When another monster, Grand Duke Lloyd Valentine, frees her, she assumes she has indeed exhaled her last breath. Aria commits her life to safeguard the duke when she reawakens in the past.
In this Webtoon, idol actor Lee Jun-ho’s makeover looks insane! Over the years, his performances have always drawn white-hot attention. In The Siren, Lee crafts a vivid portrayal of Lloyd Valentine, boasting a remarkable ability to make you fall in love with the character.
Tomb Raider King
IU (Lee Ji-eun) personifies the captain of a squad of treasure hunters in this “super webtoon project.” Tomb Raider King follows a series of enigmatic tombs that mysteriously sprouted all across the world one day, each holding a relic that confers superhuman abilities on its bearer. Joo-heon Suh is a raider, digger, and tomb hunter. He is about to perish at the hands of a potent new relic after being duped by his boss when, unexpectedly, he finds himself 15 years in the past. How Joo-heon uses his foresight to emerge as the Tomb Raider King, driven by sentiments of vengeance, is the point of the narrative.
Lore Olympus
This is one of mythology’s most fascinating and engrossing stories. Adapted from an ancient Greek narrative, ‘The Abduction of Persephone,’ the comic is a contemporary retelling of the Greek god Persephone’s love affair with Hades.
Hades joins Zeus’ party and catches sight of Persephone. Later, an encounter between the two prompts Hades and Persephone to fall in love. Persephone begs for Hades’ help in resurrecting companions who died when mortals destroyed sacred plants. The core premise of season one of Lore Olympus is a scheme devised by Minthe, Thanatos and Thetis to besmirch Persephone; Apollo’s sexual overtures towards her; and her conflicting feelings about a college scholarship that mandates her to avoid physical relationships. Season two features Persephone’s kidnapping as well as Hades and Persephone’s blossoming romance.
The Webtoon has already released a promotional video for the comic that features Sydney Sweeney playing two characters in it: the vulnerable and naive Persephone and the ferocious ‘Queen of the Underworld.’
Jungle Juice
Suchan Jang is an exceptional college student. He does, however, conceal a pair of insect wings that grew unexpectedly after he applied a bug repellent named ‘Jungle Juice.’ Suchan’s life falls apart when he reveals his reality to save someone. In the process, he uncovers a secret society of bug humans in which individuals are valued for who they are. However, this body is governed by jungle norms, and everyone must fend for themselves.
Jungle Juice is an awesome webcomic with great content, a distinctive plot, and can make a great sci-fi fantasy K-drama. Here’s a one-of-a-kind live-action video featuring ISMAHAWK.
Weak Hero
Weak Hero could be the perfect recipe for another intriguing high-school K-drama, given how the Korean entertainment industry popularized high-school dramas. The centerpiece is a school run by despots who enjoy torturing the weaker members of the class. Then arrives Gray, a new student who threatens to disrupt the current system. Surprisingly, despite his small stature, he is a wily and brutal fighter who can defeat anyone.
The Strongest Florist
Jaeho would do anything to become a florist despite having a fighter’s build and an intimidating look. Sadly, Jaeho’s domineering father disapproves and encourages his son to pursue a career as an MMA fighter. Jaeho joins the virtual reality game New World in an effort to get away from his father’s plans, but whether he succeeds in his objective or not is what will keep you glued to the story.
