In a tremendous effort to make their presence known to BTS and the rest of the globe, the Indian division of the South Korean group’s fandom ARMY have started the hashtag #DesiARMYSelcaDay on Twitter.

Fans from India are posting selcas (the Korean word for selfies) to match or compliment photos of the members of BTS. The movement also includes fan posts from India’s neighbours”” Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. #DesiARMYSelcaDay was created to celebrate self-confidence, culture and to express what it means to be a part of the group’s powerful and diverse fandom ARMY. In addition to funny or aesthetically stunning posts, there are several thousand that thank the group for their music, positivity and relatability. Some posts explain some of India’s cuisine or festivals, while others are a testament to both patriotism and fandom.

“This is to tell people we exist,” declares a Tweet by Twitter user @___tana_. “This is to celebrate our culture. This is to celebrate our skin. This is to show people that we’re a part of the fandom too. Hello, we’re desis. We’re chaotic. We’re loud. We’re here for BTS. #DesiArmySelcaDay.”

#DesiARMYSelcaDay follows several other movements within BTS’ fandom to celebrate diversity and culture, including the tremendously popular #BlackoutBTS which saw black fans within ARMY pair selfies of themselves with members of the group. In addition to bringing the attention to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh’s cultures, #DesiARMYSelcaDay is a demand to be recognised as an audience.
