Abdon Mech Changes Sonic Direction with Heartfelt New Song ‘Always Be’

The track also features vocalist Zuchobeni Tungoe

After releasing his hauntingly beautiful debut single “Again” in 2020, Nagaland singer-songwriter Abdon Mech followed it up with his five-track debut EP From A Bamboo Room last year, played tons of live shows as part of his tour and even bagged a slot at Bacardi NH7 Weekender Pune earlier this year. Now, he has been fine-tuning a new sound for himself and is ready with the first piece of music to showcase this, in the shape of the touching “Always Be.”

Penned last year, Mech says, “’Always Be’ wasn’t one of those songs you instantly knew you were going to release as soon as you finished writing it.” After reaching out to singer Zuchobeni Tungoe to feature on the track, Mech realized the song had potential. He says, “I’m glad things fell into place and we are where we are now.”

The track includes poignant acoustic guitar work, lushly layered production elements, keyboard parts that lift the song as well as a minimal groove that builds in intensity as the song grows. Mech’s silky singing and Tungoe’s angelic vocal projection stand out throughout. “’Always Be’ is about how love is multidimensional and how different people experience love differently – some in happy moments while some through loss and grief, and all experiences are valid,” Mech says.

Produced by Kevi Pucho from Nagaland’s Element Indie Records, the singer-songwriter tells us that the recording process was quite tedious. “It was one of those songs that taught me a lot of things inside the studio. It was a lovely experience working with Zucho too, who did an exceptional job,” he says.

With a music video directed by Sanen Kichu already out, Mech explains that “Always Be” is a one-off as he’s never ventured into a sonic space such as this before and might not do so again in the future. He says, “But it’s something that comes from a very honest place and I hope my listeners embrace it.” There are more singles due to be released by the end of this year. “I’m heading towards an exciting shift in my journey. Sonically, the change has been exciting and I’ve never felt more authentic and honest. The new wave of songs will reflect this change,” says Mech.
