The Bengaluru-based alternative band’s new record ‘Still As You’ is out on November 22nd
Kerala-bred, Bengaluru-based alternative rock act Black Letters’ upcoming album Still As You deals with themes of loss, loneliness, love and more (something they describe as “universal themes of hitting your mid-20s), but the music video for the song “In My Senses” sees them reunite one of Indian cinema’s most historic couples.
Over a fuzzy bassline and distinctly tempered beats, Black Letters are seen in a car with Anarkali, the female protagonist of 1960 period drama film Mughal-e-Azam, while vocalist Sharath Narayan is seen bloodied and holding an arrow. In the striking video directed by Mumbai-based Pranav Bhasin from production team EnterDLP (who also worked on Black Letters’ video for “Falter”), it turns out the band are in the midst of a mission to rewrite a tragic ending from the year 1596.
A statement released by the band notes, “We’ve always been obsessed with the past. ‘Where do we come from?’ is often perceived as the question that answers ‘where are we going?’ We often fantasize about traveling in time, and technological advances tend to take the center stage in most cinematic representations. The question we’d face soon wouldn’t be if we could do this, but if it would be the right thing to do. And what that ‘right thing’ really is. Through ‘In My Senses,’ the attempt is to portray the obscure emotions that follow along with the power to twist the past, using the example of an old Indian epic.”
With the new album out this week, Black Letters are prepping for a show on home ground on November 23rd, performing alongside Kochi disco rockers The Derelicts and electronica artist (and Derelicts founder) Ashwin Nath aka Awkward Nerd. Following a show in Hyderabad, this is Black Letters’ second show with new bassist Jeevan Antony, who stepped in earlier this year when founder member Arjun Radhakrishnan moved to Berlin to attend university.
