The Gurugram artist takes the one-man jam route, playing saxophone, guitar, drums, bass and piano/synth

Multi-instrumentalist artist Moli aka Anmol Gupta pushes his artist endeavors further with “Abstraction In The Abyss,” the first installment in his mind-bending alt/psych/jazz series called Impromptu Live. Booking out Ferris Wheel Studios in Gurugram for 12 hours, Moli performs on several instruments and sprinkles in vocals for an overall mind-bending sonic trip, captured on video by filmmaker Jagrati Marwaha.

Moli describes the five-minute “Abstraction In The Abyss” as a “psychedelic alternative jazz piece.” He adds in a press statement, “‘Abstraction’ is very special as when you walk into a studio with no preconceived notions or ideas and it comes out so beautifully, what’s more to be asked for.” Inspired particularly by American jazz fusion act Snarky Puppy’s 2014 song “Shofukan,” there’s a intriguing journey that Moli takes listeners through as we see multiple versions of the artist in the same frame, playing different instruments.

The artist had previously released a visual three-parter called “12 Ways I See Myself” in January this year, part of the concept album Retrogression Progression. The live jams are a different series, called Impromptu Live, which will have eight installments, centered around (mostly) single-take collaborations with other musicians. “The first one was of course just I, but moving to the next ones there’ll be other musicians involved,” Moli adds.

Releases from Retrogression Progression will also carry on in tandem until August. There’s also a Hindi language psych-folk jazz EP called Moh / Maya followed by another mellow “shoegaze/psychedelic post-rock vibe” project called the everlasting love that fell apart. Moli says, “Just after Retrogression Progression drops in August, we will tour the album in India. I really hope it all falls in place.”
