Exclusive Premiere: Subhi Looks Back at ‘Better’ Days on New Single
The Chicago-based pop artist calls on singer-songwriter Natania Lalwani for her latest release
On her second single of 2022, pop artist Subhi collaborates with Los Angeles singer-songwriter Natania Lalwani and producer Chris Wright, evoking gratitude over warm arrangements on “Better.” The song is accompanied by a music video centered around a couple who grow closer and more affectionate.
The song follows Subhi’s lush tune “Water Raft,” her collaboration with British singer-songwriter and producer Ed Geater. “Better” marks the somewhat rare love song from Subhi, who has often kept her lyrics more introspective and a reflection of the world and its stories as she sees it. She says, “I rarely write love songs, so this one is extra special to me. I don’t take anything in my life for granted and am grateful for all the wonderful things that have happened to me. The biggest one is finding the right life partner who makes me a better person each day. I wanted a song about us and our relationship. He complements me, even in the craziest and difficult times.”
Understandably, it’s one thing to feel and live with those thoughts of personal companionship but another matter to pen down a song about it. Subhi says, “It is hard to write about these emotions — how do you look at your own life from the outside? How do you put your feelings into words and melody?” That’s when the artist decided to enlist Natania, known for her work with everyone from Armaan Malik to Vardaan Arora and more. Subhi adds, “I had a wonderful time sharing my love story and writing this song with Natania. I was in Chicago and Natania in L.A. We coordinated over Facetime and sent each other voice memos. That’s how the song got done. LA-based producer Chris Wright came on board to work on the music for the song.”
Before it got a formal release on all streaming platforms (and the music video), “Better” won Best Song of the Month at Songwriter Universe in 2021. It also reached the semi-finals of the Unsigned Only Competition USA last year. “I really hope when people listen to this song, it reminds them of folks who make them better individuals. Let’s be grateful for the people in our lives who make us who are we today, tomorrow, and forever,” Subhi adds.
