Hear Amlan’s Hypnotic Debut Full-Length Album ‘Meglo’

The songs on the nine-track record follow a cinematic and dark theme

As luck would have it, Bengaluru-based electronic artist Amlan Mukerjee (who goes by his first name), realized that his MIDI keyboard had stopped working only a day before the lockdown was imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year. Luckily for him, he says, “I was able to get it fixed within a few hours.” With that timely repair work, he got to finish his recently released nine-track debut full-length album Meglo.

The new album is a follow-up to Amlan’s 2018 debut four-track EP Captivate. After the release of that record, the artist went on to drop a dozen singles and become quite a fixture in Bengaluru’s club scene. Over the last six months, however, Amlan began surfing through all his unfinished ideas and began to hear a common pattern in them. He says, “All the tracks in the album come from this organic repository of sounds.”

That commonality within the tunes is a dark and cinematic approach which the producer states “flows like a movie.” He adds, “Each track represents a moment from my childhood.” The album is loaded with immersive delight (“Lolita”), percussion flair (“Agrabah”), electro-funk (“Meglo”), industrial music (“After Dark”) and more. “I wanted to recreate the cinematic vibes of the Seventies and capture the nostalgic moments from all the action movies I grew up watching,” says Amlan. Meglo has been mastered by New York City-based audio engineer Bhushan Govilkar at Germano Studios.

The producer has no inclination to slow down as he’s currently working on a music video for “After Dark” and has also made the stems for his tracks available for artists who wish to remix them. In turn, he’s working on remixes of music by New Delhi producer-singer Komorebi and Bengaluru producer Fake Tattoos. “There’s a lot more to be done, it’s an ongoing process,” says Amlan.
