Hear Lana Del Rey’s Synth-Driven New Song, ‘High By the Beach’

Lana Del Rey is worn down by life and love on her synth-driven new single, seeking sweet escape near the ocean. “All I wanna do is get high by the beach / Get high by the beach, get high,” she sings on the chorus, backed by minimal electronics. Del Rey also lashes out in anger, telling a partner, “Don’t need your money, money to get me what I want / Lights, camera, action / I’ll do it on my own.” “High By the Beach” is the singer’s second tease of her upcoming fourth LP, Honeymoon, which is expected later this year.

“It started with the chorus,” Del Rey told Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe of writing the track. “I was driving by the beach a lot. This was probably one of the last ones on the record…Even with the harmonies, it almost sounded monotone. But with the beat, it has this trap influence.”

Last month, Del Rey released her new album’s title track and lead single, “Honeymoon,” which takes a more orchestral, melodramatic approach. “We both know the history of violence that surrounds you,” she sings over strings and piano. “But I’m not scared, there’s nothing to lose now that I’ve found you.”

The singer revealed the album title to Billboard in January. “It’s very different from the last one and similar to the first two, Born to Die and Paradise,” she said. “It’s growing into something I really like. I’m kind of enjoying sinking into this more noirish feel for this one. It’s been good.” She also announced that Honeymoon will include a cover of Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.”

Last year, Del Rey released the Dan Auerbach-produced Ultraviolence and contributed a pair of lavish ballads ”“ “Big Eyes” and “I Can Fly” ”“ to the Tim Burton film Big Eyes. This summer, Del Rey toured with Courtney Love and Grimes in support of the LP.
