Israel’s Buttering Trio Return for India Tour

Producer and co-founder Rejoicer talks about stereotypes, playing festivals and club shows in the country this week

On their debut 2013 album Toast, Israeli act Buttering Trio came up with “Falafel,” a song that led them to create a motto ”“ “make falafel, not war.” Co-founder Yuval Havkin aka Rejoicer says, “Our good friend Jengo who made the artwork for it, [he] drew people sitting around a big falafel ball and the tagline came from there.”

It might seem like they’re stereotyping Israelis, but Rejoicer says they use it to their advantage. “Maybe it is stereotypical but the truth is we make, eat and talk about hummus (and hummus related foods) on a daily basis. And is it stereotypical if you speak about yourself?”

Comprising vocalist Keren Dun and bassist Beno Hendler, Berlin-born, Tel Aviv-based Buttering Trio are certainly as much about the trippy, good vibes as they are about war and melancholy. With three full-length albums to their name ”“ including Threesome, which released in 2016 ”“ Buttering Trio use hypnotic beats, chunky basslines and usually gentle vocals that can be described closest to electronic and trip-hop. Rejoicer says about the moodiness of their music, “I guess it’s the kind of people we are–happy and sad, dancing and crying, joyful and dark at the same time.”

The trio first visited India for a performance at Magnetic Fields Festival in Rajasthan in 2016 and have a tour plotted out this time around, courtesy of artist and event management company Mixtape. With their show in New Delhi wrapped up, Buttering Trio heads to newly-opened venue Fandom at Gilly’s Redefined on February 9th, Vh1 Supersonic in Pune on February 10th and the Udaipur World Music Festival on February 11th.

Rejoicer recalls they took full advantage of staying in Rajasthan the last time around, but this time, they’re crunched for time owing to an upcoming European run of shows. The producer adds about their setlists for the India tour, “We made two different setlists–for the club shows [there’s] a more intimate, story-telling melodic setlist. The festival set is more uplifting, intended to catch the attention of a big crowd.”
