The Chinese pop star wraps up March with a music video inspired by Nineties Hong Kong films
Jackson Wang is on a roll and there’s no stopping him. The rapper, songwriter and producer has released a brand new track titled “LMLY” or “Leave Me Loving You.” The record marks the GOT7 member’s fourth solo release this month after an impressive list of collaborative projects such as “Magnetic” with K-pop’s veteran soloist Rain, “So Bad” with Chinese rapper Vava, and “M.I.A” with Indonesian singer, Afgan.
“LMLY” sees Wang foray into the iconic era of Eighties disco-pop sound marked with his laid-back, soothing vocals. Written and composed by Wang alongside Michael Matosic, Richard Boardman, LOSTBOY and Pablo Bowman, “LMLY” narrates the tale of a secret admirer daydreaming about a woman he just met. Wanting to be more than just strangers, Wang expresses his desires through heartfelt lyrics, “You don’t call me baby/ You call me my name/ But I keep on hoping/ Nothing has changed/ Yeah yeah”, hoping the one-sided nature of his attraction would bloom into a relationship.
Wang wrote the script for the music video and co-directed it with 88rising’s James Mao aka Mamesjao. The clip sees Wang play the role of a waiter who falls in love with a woman dining at the restaurant he works at. He fantasizes about going on a date with her but finds out later that she’s in a relationship with another man. The video features hazy lighting and aesthetics similar to Chinese films in the Nineties. “I came up with the treatment that follows my previous release ‘Pretty Please,’ still staying in the time zone of Nineties Hong Kong-Chinese movie style,” Wang revealed in the video’s credits. “The way I decided to shoot the video, it’s more towards [a] movie structure this time, rather than the musical and choreo performances I always do.”
Earlier in March, Wang revealed he will be releasing 30+ projects this year, including both a Chinese album and an English album. Late last month, Wang and his fellow members of GOT7 surprised fans with a raw and intimate pop-single “Encore.”
