Rajasthani folk and Sufi mysticism abound in artist Jatin and Wings’ new EP Sufi Folk Tales, which kicked off with an interpretation of saint-poet Kabir’s poem “Moko Kahan Dhoonde” featuring 10-year-old singer Thanu Khan.

Khan, hailing from the village of Suwala, leads the song with a certain piety, going over cinematic folk-fusion influences brought by Jatin and Wings. In addition to “Moko Kahan Dhoonde,” Sufi Folk Tales – released via the Universal Music India label IndieA and motoring company MG India’s music series MG Taal – Jatin and Wings has also released “Mann Ki Gathri” featuring vocalist Arif Khan Rodu and “Tu Dekh Tamasha” featuring singer Moti Khan.

A press release adds, “Each track seamlessly blends traditional melodies with contemporary sounds to offer listeners a truly immersive experience. To make this project more authentic and real, Jatin traveled to the remotest parts of Rajasthan and spent months with the artists to bring out the best music for the audience. He also recorded and shot the videos at the artists’ homes.”

Showcasing India’s traditional music culture with a modern twist – and lots of visuals from the deserts of Rajasthan to boot – Sufi Folk Tales comes on the back of Jatin and Wings 2020 songs “Dil Chale Jidhar” and “Firdaus,” with fellow Jaipur-origin artist Abhishek Gaur and singer-songwriter Sayantika Ghosh on the latter. Before Jatin and Wings, frontman Jatin Sawlani was part of Jaipur metallers Night Wings III, who released their self-titled album via Universal Music India in 2014.

Jatin says in a statement, “I have always been drawn to the power of music to evoke emotions and inspire change. I wanted to create something that celebrates the rich tapestry of Indian music while offering a fresh perspective that speaks to modern audiences. This project is a labor of love, and I am grateful to IndieA Records and MG Taal for their support in bringing it to life.”

Universal Music India’s Independent Artist Collective head Sumedhas Rajgopal added in his statement, “We are delighted to partner with Jatin and Wings on this groundbreaking project. At Universal Music India, we are passionate about supporting emerging talent and pushing the boundaries of creativity. Sufi Folk Tales is a testament to the power of music to transcend boundaries and unite people from all walks of life.”
