Meet Mumbai Blues-Rock Trio Bluestackface

The band showcased a slamming performance earlier this month at city-based venue antiSOCIAL’s International Blues Day gig

There’s something peculiar about hearing a band live for the first time that catches your attention without knowing anything about them and letting their music do the talking. That’s exactly how it went down when we caught Mumbai blues-rockers Bluestackface performing at the International Blues Day gig at Lower Parel’s antiSOCIAL, curated by guitarist Adil Manuel. The band bagged the opening slot before Manuel and his crew took the stage after winning a call for entries to play at the show.

“It was definitely exciting and at the same time refreshing, to be honest, to know that we got the opportunity to play together as a full band after a long time! The gig experience was pretty amazing and we had an amazing time sharing the stage with the Adil Manuel Collective and a lot of musicians from the blues scene,” says guitarist-vocalist Rohan Shirsolkar.

Shirsolkar and his bandmates – bassist Jatin Jitendrakumar and drummer Evan S – are no strangers to band competitions. The group were also one of the finalists of the Mahindra Blues Band Hunt in early 2020. On how Bluestackface initially formed, Shirsolkar says, “I thought of making a solo project. I already knew Jatin and Evan since we played together in different bands previously, so we started jamming in late 2018 and revealed the project in 2019 with a single [“You Left Me First”].”

Last year, the band released their power-packed four-track debut EP Both Sides. The record includes fiery solos, heavy distorted guitars, riffs galore and plenty of pulsating grooves, and overall is an in-your-face unadulterated blues record. “The songs on our EP focus on topics like trying hard, confusion and circumstances of standing up for something. Sonically, the genesis of all the songs is from the blues but it takes a new shape most of the time when Jatin and Evan bring in their influences during the writing process,” says Shirsolkar. At the moment, the band plans on writing more music and playing plenty more gigs.
