The multi-instrumentalist draws from raag Bhairavi for his latest, part of his upcoming album ‘Retrogression Progression’
Psychedelic, experimental indie artist and filmmaker Moli aka Anmol Gupta is at his mind-bending, grandiose and vulnerable best on his latest release, “Raag of a Broken Heart” which comes with a (literally) fiery music video.
Inspired by raag Bhairavi to showcase an Indian classical vocal element that heightens the song, Moli also puts together a visual narrative for his heartbreak, with mind-bending video effects, slick choreography and even setting his coat on fire. In the age of AI effects and computer-generated imagery (CGI), Moli says he set his arm on fire while wearing a coat and shot it, which is what we see as he confronts an elusive figure that portrays his partner in the video.
Although relatively shorter than his other works like “It’s You and Your Eyes” and “12 Ways I See Myself, Pt 1, 2 & 3” which play out like an engrossing, trippy short film, “Raag of a Broken Heart” still tells a story in its intensity. It also reflects the artist’s approach to songwriting for the project. He says in a statement, “One evening, the track was born by experimenting on the raga and adding elements. Before I knew it, it was already a combination of two ragas.” Elsewhere, on Spotify, Moli describes the song as a “real personal track.”
The track is taken from Moli’s upcoming album Retrogression Progression. While more details are awaited on the album, Moli is touring to road-test new and old material. The five-city run of shows – which kicked off in New Delhi on April 5th – will see the artist’s band, Moli Gala Recording Co., performing in Pune on April 12th, in Bengaluru on April 13th (with support from local singer-songwriter Frizzell D’Souza) and in Goa on April 14th. A show in Mumbai is yet to be announced.
