The capital’s death metal band are finally ready with their sprawling new concept album ‘A Spectral Oblivion’ and set for a seven-city tour next month

After nearly four years, it’s only fair to expect a double album from New Delhi prog death metallers Fragarak. A Spectral Oblivion, the follow-up to their 2013 debut Crypts of Dissimulation, is a 11-track concept album that clocks in at 85 minutes. Although frontman Supratim Sen says the band didn’t intentionally create a double album, they just had enough songs to make for one mammoth release.
In the works since early 2016, A Spectral Oblivion tells a tragedy narrated from “a lunatic’s perspective”. Sen adds over email that the aim with writing from the mind of the unstable is to “reveal the darker realms of human thought patterns and create an empathetic outlook on disordered mental expressions of reality.”

Sonically, Sen says they’ve taken an “experimental approach to extreme metal”. They even tapped Australian drummer Louis Rando (part of Singaporean metallers Impiety) to record for the album. Sen says, “We have been in touch right from when we met him on our China tour and he is such a cool person to hang out with after he’s done being the monster on stage.”
Recorded between October and December last year, the first taste of A Spectral Oblivion ”“ releasing via Transcending Obscurity India on October 10th ”“ arrives with “In Rumination II ”“ Reflections,” an 11-minute mystical, dark and heavy number that has them firing on all cylinders.
Much before the release, Fragarak ”“ Sen, bassist Kartikeya Sinha, guitarists Arpit Pradhan and Ruben Franklin ”“ are heading out on one of their biggest set of shows in India so far, supporting Australian metallers Psycroptic. The seven-city tour for Fragarak will feature drummer Vishesh Singh on stage, getting a chance to showcase the range of A Spectral Oblivion. Sen adds, “Preps are fully underway to belt out the all new songs set-list live.”
