Premiere: Sutej Singh Soars in ‘Walk My Path’ Playthrough Video

The Solan, Himachal Pradesh guitar whiz marks one year of his debut album ‘The Emerging’ with a four-city tour

When Solan-based guitarist and composer Sutej Singh posed a question like “What makes you prog?” to his fans online, the answers weren’t disappointing or snooty. “People said, ‘You make me prog.’ I think I got two or three replies like that,” Singh says with a laugh.

In return for this generous amount of love from listeners he’s gained since the release of his 2018 debut album The Emerging, Singh has been posting snippets of material from the forthcoming second album. He even showed off test guitars he received from local guitar and bass maker, Cathode. He agrees that getting a new guitar definitely influences songwriting. “I was testing this new seven-string guitar and some new cool riffs came into my mind. It really inspires me a lot,” he says.

In addition to a new playthrough video for the breakfree, prog-leaning “Walk My Path,” Singh is bringing in the one year anniversary of releasing The Emerging with a tour. Put together by his label Pine Cone Records, Singh will perform in Pune, Mumbai (at gig series Blackblood’s 16th edition), Bengaluru and New Delhi. He says, “I’m going to play the entire album, because it’s the first anniversary tour. I’ll try to play a couple of new songs as well. In my case, I use a bunch of samples and backing tracks. For the new songs, I need to record the samples and it’s going to be a tough job to play them like that, but it’ll be a new challenge.”

While songs like “Walk My Path” showcase Singh’s distinct style of creating radiant guitar melodies and uptempo flow, the new material has more “grandeur.” He adds, “You can call it more epic. I’m trying to make shorter songs this time, it’s quite a challenge for me.” Considering the moderate success of The Emerging, Singh has built a fan following that he says creates expectations and pressures (of the good kind, mostly) about when new material is out and whether it’ll sound similar to his previous songs. He says, “That’s a lot of pressure on me as an artist to make a better album but also be the artist that you are already.”
